Miami Ostomy Aftercare was privileged to be included at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics’ “Happy Wound Day II: Wound Healing, Ostomy & Hyperbaric Medicine” symposium on July 21, 2018 at the Newman Alumni Center on UM’s main campus.
Monica Perez, RN, Director of the Wound Healing, Ostomy and Hyperbaric Center was the Chair of the conference committee and our own Miami Ostomy Aftercare’s Vice President Ana M. Restrepo RN, BSN, CWON, served as the co-chair of the conference committee.
Over 120 medical professionals representing 38 institutions attended. Twenty-seven corporations, suppliers and nonprofits set up information booths (including our Secretary Rob Seaman of ConvaTec). The day-long symposium featured six speakers on subjects of wound care, ostomy, use of hyperbaric oxygen, plastic surgery and the newest medical procedures.
Keynote speaker was Joyce Black, Ph.D., Re, FAAN, of the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she is a professor in the College of Nursing. Dr. Black is past president of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel. She is co-chair of the task force to define Deep Tissue Pressure Injury and the task force to update the definitions of the stages of pressure injuries.
Dr. Black cautioned attendees to not only carefully examine incoming patients, but to also obtain pre-admission circumstances. She stressed that new studies show these “Purple Pressure Ulcers” can begin after only two to three hours immobility, and it is important to know if the patient was in surgery for that long, or if they had been found at home unconscious for an unknown time, or any other situation that may have had the patient immobile for two to three hours or more. These facts influence the treatment and impact the outcome for the patient.
Miami Ostomy Aftercare held a raffle at the symposium with the winner receiving a scholarship to the WOCN’s Ostomy Care Associate (OCA®) class beginning in the spring 2019. The winner is Thelma Williams with Tenet Health. Congratulations Thelma!
The University of Miami awarded three information booths for their best UM spirit decorations and Miami Ostomy Aftercare was thrilled to have been selected to win. Our decorations were created by Ana Restrepo and Aloyma Martinez Cintado. Our booth was staffed by President Hal Spaet, Robin Robinson, Susan Neuman and Sue Gale.
