7th Support Group Meeting

LEFT: Rosalind Jenkins gave a beautiful rendition of "Lean On Me" for the Support Group. | RIGHT: Sarah Biggart on the big screen presents Ostomy Secrets all the way from San Diego, CA.

The Support Group Meeting #7 was held on November 27, 2018, at 6 p.m. in the Board of Directors' room of the University of Miami Hospital.

Rosalind Jenkins, a GOOD WILL employee of UMH, who visits the patients after their surgeries, entertained us with the song she sings to her patients when she enters their rooms, “Lean On Me.” She then told us the moving story of her illness and recovery and why she feels she can make a difference in the patients’ lives. She is a very caring person and gives her patients the inspiration to tackle and live with their new situation.

Then Sarah Biggart, manager of Ostomy Secrets, a ConvaTec company, spoke to us by video from San Diego, California. After telling us about her illness, misdiagnosis and surgeries, she told us about Ostomy Secrets. It is a company that offers a full line of stylish and functional undergarments and swimwear for men and women and skin care products that are designed to support the ostomy system. These products can be ordered by telephone and Sarah is available to speak with you to give her advice and to discuss the products you need and when you need it most. You can reach her at 1-800-422-8811.

MOA Secretary Rob Seaman had samples of many products and when MOA Vice President Ana Restrepo held them up, Sarah was able to tell attendees about the garment, how they should be worn and the people who should be wearing them. They were passed around for all present to examine. Sarah took questions from those in attendance.

Afterwards patients were able to ask questions of the ostomy nurses present privately about their specific concerns.

We want to thank Claudia Maione, Med Supply, Inc., for the wonderful refreshments and holiday décor she so elegantly provided.

There will not be a meeting in December. The next meeting will be on January 22, 2019, at 6:30 pm.
